Bare Root Season in Sacramento (January, February and into March)

This is the time of year to buy bare root trees. A bare root tree is literally a young tree without dirt ready for planting. They are inexpensive, light and easy to plant.

I am a big home orchard supporter. A few small fruit trees at home are easy, fun and very rewarding. Right now you can buy bare root fruit stock for just about any variety you can imagine for $15 – $30 a tree.

They are easy to plant, just deep enough to get the roots under the surface (no backbreaking holes to dig…or big pots of dirt to cart around.

Some nursery’s carry multi-fruit trees. You can get peach, plum and nectarine on one tree. Keep them trimmed and they provide a family lots of tasty fruit without taking up much yard space.

And get the kids involved…sure they will grumble getting off the play-station for 30 minutes, but they will remember fondly planting the tree and eating the ‘fruit of their labor’ when they are old. This is one of those pleasant memories that should be passed from generation to generation.

If you want some ideas or to learn a bit more about this satisfying hobby send me an email and I’ll share some pointers.
